About
First Signal is a daily newsletter about the stock market. Every trading day, about an hour after the close, it tells you what moved, why it moved, and what we make of it all.
We start from the moves. When a stock, a sector or a market jumps or falls, we find the story behind it, go to the first-hand source (a filing, a company release, a government report) and tell it plainly. Then we tell you what we think.
How to read it
- Facts are plain. Every fact links to where it came from, first-hand wherever we can reach it.
- Opinion is in yellow. When you see this color, that's our judgment, not a fact.
What's inside
- The Open. The day in one paragraph.
- What Happened Today? The most important stories, through our eyes.
- Big Moves, but No Explanation. Money moves in mysterious ways.
- The Earnings Desk. Who reported, how the market took it, and the week ahead.
- Connecting the Dots. Where we are, and where the puck goes next, with our odds.
- Settling the Tab. Fridays: the week, settled.
- Closing the Books. The last trading day of each month: the month, audited, followed by The Call, our paper portfolio, rebalanced once a month by our rules-based sector rotation and scored in public.
